The Halloween Dinner Party
Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a time that marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. It was believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin, and people lit bonfires and shared food both to celebrate and to protect themselves from wandering spirits.
When Christianity spread through Europe, these traditions blended with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, days dedicated to remembering saints and praying for the departed. Food was central to these celebrations: soul cakes were given in exchange for prayers, apples and nuts were enjoyed in seasonal games, and hearty dishes made from autumn’s harvest were shared among families and communities.
This three-course menu, paired with a Halloween cocktail, takes inspiration from those traditions. It uses seasonal ingredients and a touch of Halloween playfulness to bring the history of the holiday to the modern table.
